Nigerian Army Foils Attempted Ammunition Smuggling Operation in Ogun State

Troops Intercept Truck Load of Ammunition En Route to Anambra State.

Troops of the Nigerian Army's 192 Battalion, operating in the 81 Division Area of Responsibility, successfully intercepted a truck loaded with smuggled ammunition destined for Anambra State. Acting on actionable intelligence, the troops conducted a meticulous and rigorous Stop and Search operation along the Ajilete-Owode Road in Yewa North LGA of Ogun State on July 15, 2023.

During the operation, the soldiers discovered an illegal cache of ammunition concealed in a truck bearing registration number ENU 697 XY. The truck contained 720 packets of Red Star Cartridges of 12 Calibre, each packet containing 25 cartridges, totaling 18,000 cartridges. Additionally, there were 250 packets of live (black) cartridges, with 10 packets per packet, totaling 2,500 cartridges of the same calibre.

The individuals involved in the smuggling operation have been apprehended and are currently in custody. The suspects have been identified as Mr. Eric Seworvor, a Ghanaian national, and the truck driver, Mr. Lukman Sani. They are assisting with ongoing investigations.

Preliminary investigation findings suggest that the ammunition was surreptitiously transported from Mali and smuggled through the Idiroko International Border. The criminals successfully evaded several checkpoints en route to their final destination in Onitsha, Anambra State, where they intended to deliver the illegal ammunition. Fortunately, the vigilant troops intervened in a timely manner, preventing potential chaos and ensuring the safety of innocent members of the public.

The Nigerian Army is calling on all law-abiding citizens to continue supporting the troops and other security agencies by providing credible and actionable information. This collaborative effort is crucial in combating security challenges across the country.

Major General Taoreed Lagbaja, the Chief of Army Staff, has commended the troops for their commitment and urged them not to relent. He emphasized the importance of their synergy with other services and security agencies to maintain a safe and secure atmosphere for all Nigerians and promote socio-economic development across the country.

Brigadier General Onyema Nwachukwu, the Director of Army Public Relations, released this statement on July 17, 2023.
