Breaking News: Obi Urges Diplomacy in Niger.

Peter Gregory Obi, the Presidential candidate of the Labour Party, has issued a statement regarding the recent developments in the neighboring Niger Republic. He emphasized that these developments have garnered international attention and are of dire and urgent national interest and security concern for Nigeria.

Obi stressed the importance of dialogue and diplomacy in resolving the situation, considering the West African sub-region's realpolitik. He commended the efforts of various mediators, including Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar, His Eminence Muhammadu Sa'ad Abubakar, and His Royal Highness Sanusi Lamido Sanusi.

While ECOWAS remains open to different conflict resolution options, Obi underscored that diplomacy should remain the overarching imperative. He joined other well-meaning Nigerians in advocating for diplomatic dialogue among all parties involved in the crisis.

Furthermore, Obi highlighted the significance of allowing the people of Niger to swiftly return to a representative democratic government through their national institutions. He called for national, regional, and international assistance to aid Niger in returning to normalcy.

Obi discouraged the spread of military dictatorships in West Africa and emphasized that armed deterrence should be restrained through multilateral diplomatic mechanisms. He called for a concerted multilateral coalition involving Nigeria, ECOWAS, the AU, and the UN to facilitate a programmed return to a democratic constitutional order in Niger. He reaffirmed Nigeria's leadership role in this process.
